“Sampology makes me wanna break dance” – Peaches
To say Sampology has a bright future ahead of him is an understatement. Since bursting onto the scene in 2003 as a gig-hungry, barely-17-year-old kid, Sampology (Sam Poggioli) has fast established himself as one of the country’s most talented, technically proficient, versatile and unique DJ/producers. In just 5 years, he’s already achieved in Australia what most music artists would kill to achieve in a lifetime – national touring, supporting some of the worlds best artists and his personal heroes, a list of festival slots as long as his arm, sold out shows across the country, remixing for some of Australia’s biggest bands, and a #1 in the Juno Highest Selling Chart for his debut original vinyl release and a top 10 place in the top 50 DJ poll. His creds are pretty decent, especially considering he wasn’t even born until ’86.
"Sampology is dope as hell!!!......I mean not as dope as me, but dope enough......
I mean he can be as dope as me one day......but probably not." – DJ Craze
A Hip Hop DJ at heart, Sampology brings a unique approach to his love of quality dance music with a hard working attitude behind the decks. “He’s always so darned busy on the decks” is often the remark from industry types and punters alike. From hip hop shows, to club shows, festival shows, concert supports, small intimate dirty disco basements, his experience performing for different kinds of crowds gives Sam a great ability to read the crowd. This versatility is key to Sampology’s positioning as possibly the most versatile working DJ in Australia, from night-to-night, week-to-week consistently delivering faultless sets be they hip hop, rare groove, disco & funk jams, Baltimore or house. It is the enjoyment of this freedom of being the DJ that crowds know and love as a fine connoisseur or many different styles that is his point of difference to any other DJ in Australia.
"Tip-top turntablism from an angelic-looking Aussie scratch prodigy who goes by the name of Sampology. Although watching aerial gymnastics and avoiding the beads of hot sweat dripping from back-flipping muscular bodies has a certain sex-factor, it’s the music that grabs you by the udders. Sampology blends and hand mixes his turntables like Chopin must have played the piano..." - What's On In Theatre, London
Following his debut remix release for Australian wonder-band Pnau, Sampology released his first vinyl original ‘Back on the Drums’ on UK label Good Groove in 2008. The tune swiftly went to number 1 on the Juno Highest Selling Charts and within three weeks the pressing had sold out in Australia. He has a forthcoming remix release on Resin Dogs “More” album of “Peace & Love” released in Australia in November and in the UK/EUR in February 2009. Currently, between international dates, Sam is busy in the studio working on new original material for an EP release in 2010.
A simple DJ and producer Sampology is not – working on a number of side projects both solo and in collaboration with his beatboxing partner in crime, Tom Thum. Launched in early 2008, the Sampology & Tom Thum MPC Beatbox show is a 60 minute audio feast of turntablism, beatboxing and live effects action on two MPC samplers and loop pedals. Despite having only performed the show a handful of times, the demand for the duo is already enormous following shows at Good Vibrations Festival, supporting Shadow & Cut Chemists Hard Sell Powerhouse show, Valley Fiesta and even the Lord Mayor’s Ball.
“...Sampology, a well-equipped D.J.; and Tom Thum, a beat boxer whose microphone and voice alone make him a one-man band... These young Australian men, above, include no poor players, I’m happy to say, though their talents aren’t the kinds usually seen on an Off Broadway stage. And heard no more? These guys have been heard all over the world, not to mention that your ears may ring when you leave.” - NY Times
Further to this Sam launched his “Sampology Super Visual Disco Party” show on the Rane TTM57 audio/vision mixer in August 2008 to a sold out show at Brisbane’s historical and legendary Moonbar. A cutting edge, AV show involving the manipulation of video clips using 2 turntables transmitting both audio and visual in perfect synch over speakers and onto screens. Sampology's prowess with audio visual turntablism led to three 2009 seasons with Strut n Fret's Tom Tom Crew for their Broadway New York season, Udderbelly London season and a final season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
“The live music is the real star of this show. The dexterity of DJ Sampology at his turntables impresses more than any amount of aerial business, enhanced by screens which offer a bird's eye view of his flying hands, alternating with amusing sampled visuals.” - The Independent, UK
Indeed, to say the future is bright for Sampology is an understatement. This is only the beginning for this insanely talented, creative, genius-like young artist. To achieve this much at barely the age of 22 is an indication that the best is yet to come. For Sampology, the future is his.
